Safely Using Technology
With technology being more prominent in our lives than ever before, it can seem hard to escape the effects of digital screens on our eyes. If you’ve spent long periods looking at a screen, you’ve probably experienced digital eye strain (DES).
We believe that through education and the proper preventative measures, we can help our patients keep their eyes safe and have a more enjoyable digital experience.
Digital Eye Strain Symptoms
At first, some patients may not experience excessive symptoms for spending long periods on a digital screen. However, after frequent use, the symptoms may worsen. If you suffer from symptoms of digital eye strain, we recommend booking an appointment to discuss prevention methods.
The following are common symptoms of digital eye strain:
- Headaches
- Eye fatigue/tired eyes
- Difficulty focusing to the current list
- Blurred vision at distance after prolonged near work.
- Dry eyes
Reducing Strain
The average American spends 7 hours a day on their computer at home or work. Without taking the proper breaks or using the right eyewear, this screen time can have a significant effect on your eyes over time. To reduce these symptoms, try the following.

20-20-20 Rule
The 20-20-20 rule is a simple yet effective way to reduce the strain on your eyes from digital screens. Every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, take a 20-second break by staring at an object that is 20 feet or more away from you. Even though it’s only a 20-second break, this can help your eyes to reset after staring at a screen.
Blue Light Glasses
If you know you have to spend extended periods on digital devices every day, blue light glasses can be helpful. These glasses have specific lenses that are designed to minimize the effects of blue light glare on your eyes, helping to reduce digital eye strain.
Enjoy Your Screen Time
Spending time on digital devices isn’t something you should have to cut out altogether. However, it’s important to be aware of the effects it has on your eyes if they aren’t properly protected and given the breaks they need.
Our team is happy to answer any questions you have on digital eye strain and how you can help protect your eyes.
